Agency vs freelancer vs Wix: which is right for your website?
An honest comparison of hiring a web agency, a freelancer or building it yourself on Wix or another builder: cost, quality, risk, ownership and when each makes sense.
Short answer: use a website builder such as Wix when you need a simple site quickly and can maintain it yourself; hire a freelancer for a well-defined project with a small budget; choose an agency when the website must win business, rank in search, integrate with other systems or be supported for years.
Website builder (Wix, Squarespace and similar)
- Cost: a monthly subscription; check the builder's current pricing page, as plans change often.
- Best for: a first site, a portfolio or a simple local business page.
- Watch out for: limited SEO control, slower pages as you add apps, and sites that cannot be moved to another host.
- Your time: you write, design and update everything.
Freelancer
- Cost: usually less than an agency for the same scope.
- Best for: a clear brief, a fixed set of pages, and a client who can manage the project.
- Watch out for: one person covering design, code, SEO, hosting and security; holidays and illness; and what happens if they stop working.
Agency
- Cost: typically £2,500–£10,000 for a small-business website from a small or mid-sized agency.
- Best for: sites that must generate enquiries or sales, multiple languages, e-commerce, integrations and ongoing SEO.
- Watch out for: long contracts, hourly add-ons and unclear ownership. Ask who owns the site and domain.
Where Penta Services fits
We price like a lean team but work like an agency: a business website from £745 setup plus £49 a month with hosting included, one project lead, and you own the site once setup is paid. If you would rather build it yourself, our AI Website Builder starts at £19 a month.
Questions that decide it
- How much is a new customer worth to you, and how many does the site need to bring in?
- Who will update the site every month?
- Do you need more than one language, online payments or integrations?
- What happens to the site if your supplier disappears?
If the answers point to an agency, ask for a fixed quote. If they point to a builder, try ours first.
